Dr.
Axelrod has performed and taught as an author and educator lecturing in
England,
France,
Sicily,
Ital
y,
Serbia,
Macedonia,
Montenegro,
Croatia, Hong Kong
and throughout the People's Republic
of
China
and summer of 2007, he will present
workshops and a performance in
Ireland
.
As a performer, the New York Times, has deemed him to be "A
treat!" He has appeared at the United Nations, for the American Library
Association, as a feature on National Public Radio, as America's official
representative at the International Struga Festivals, as featured reader at the
New York State Fine Arts Center in Albany, as poet-in-residence for Virginia,
and at literally hundreds more venues including radio and television
appearances.
Himself a student of ten languages, he is the author of seventeen
books--most recently, The Impossibility of Dreams (AhadadaBooks,
Tokyo
&
Toronto
, 2007). His publications
include literally hundreds of articles, translated and published in numerous
languages including Albanian and Bulgarian, Chinese and Japanese, Hebrew and
Yiddish, Italian and Sicilian, Greek and Macedonian, Russian and Romanian,
French and Creole, Spanish and Portuguese, German and Dutch among others!
He has entered record books as the only American to receive two back-to-back
Fulbright Awards in separate areas, as poet-in-residence in Yugoslavia and then
professor of American Literature in Macedonia. With his third Fulbright, he
became the first poet to be formally acknowledged as American Poet in Residence
in the People's Republic of
China
. There he also assisted in
establishing an
American
Center
, taught media and literature and
lectured in six provinces. For his work with alternative healing and creative
energy studies in
China
and his interpretation of the Tao te Ching in his book entitled,
Another Way, he
was given an honorary title of Taoist Priest.
Dr. Axelrod holds his Ph.D. from Union Institute in Academic Program Design and
Administration, granted for his establishing the not-for-profit writers services,
Writers Unlimited Agency, Inc., as well as Writers Ink Press. He holds
a Master of Fine Arts degree in poetry from the
University
of
Iowa Writers Workshops
; a Master of Arts degree in poetry from The Johns Hopkins University
Writing Seminars; and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the
University
of
Massachusetts
.
Dr. Axelrod has received grants for literally hundreds of thousands of dollars
of writing, arts and service projects, most recently from Wal-Mart Good, Works
Program and the America the Beautiful Fund for the Young Poets
Mentoring Program he will coordinate as Suffolk County Poet Laureate. He is
already searching for young poets and established poets and teachers to act

As
founder and director of Writers Unlimited Agency, Inc., a not-for-profit
(501-C-3) organization he continues to provide information on the writing arts.
In that capacity he also publishes arts books under the imprint of Writers Ink
Press, over thirty of which have appeared since the press and Writers Unlimited
were founded in 1976. More recently he founded 3WS, World-Wide Writers Services,
a network for authors and editors aiding international publication and exchange.
